Cavan has a great range of places for walkers to pace through.

Walk along the river and canal paths between towns with a flask of soup and a companion or three. Try gently rolling drumlins one day and upland blanket bogs the next. Enjoy the tranquility of forest walks in Kingscourt, Cavan, Virginia and Balieborough.   Visit the Marble Arch Caves Geopark – accredited by UNESCO – a special place spanning the uplands of Cavan and Fermanagh. By foot, neo- lithic Ireland reveals itself quietly as you stroll along. In ancient woods you get a feeling for why our ancestors picked this place over others.   Or walk the Cavan Way from Dowra to Blacklion past the Shannon Pot – the source of the Shannon – a place of rich folklore.

Cavan Walking Festival takes place every May with guided walks taking place over a week throughout the county. If fishing is your thing, Cavan is definitely your spot. Whether it’s coarse, pike or game fishing, we have a quiet spot for you.   Now you’d think with 366 lakes, and the Shannon and Erne rivers, people around here would be satisfied with things. Well, of course, you would be wrong. Famous for coarse and pike fishing, there are many fine and game angling river stretches and wild brown trout lake fisheries in County Cavan, including the very famous Lough Sheelin brown trout fishery.

Established angling towns with angler – friendly accommodation offer the visiting angler excellent facilities ensuring a truly memorable holiday.   Most angling centres run angling festivals and competitions throughout the year for the match angler. There is no licence or fee required to enjoy coarse fishing in County Cavan. There is a licence requirement when fishing for trout at any of the game fisheries.
